Te Arawa Fisheries’ moreish Hī mussels are making their way into the hands of political ambassadors from around the world.

UK High Commissioner, Her Excellency Laura Clarke, has been the latest diplomat to try the Hī mussel range, giving the innovative Māori product her tick of approval.

Ms Clarke joins a growing list of diplomats and politicians who have been able to taste test Hī mussels, including Canadian High Commissioner Francis Huot, South African High Commissioner Vuyiswa Tulelo and Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries Rino Tirikatene.

Ms Clarke, on behalf of Britain, has played an integral role in negotiating a forward-thinking, mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Aotearoa that includes a game changing indigenous chapter.

Speaking to media after the FTA was agreed in principle, Ms Clarke said the indigenous chapter not only “reflects the historic relationship between Māori and the UK … but the aspiration to have a closer trading relationship in the future,  ensuring that Māori can take advantage of the opportunities”.

Te Arawa Fisheries believes this indigenous chapter will help to protect Māori interests and allow Māori brands and products, like Hī, to have a clearer path into the vast and lucrative UK market.
