In 2011, Te Arawa Fisheries established a programme to assist Iwi organisations reaching their aspirations. Each year the Te Kotahitanga o Te Arawa Waka Fisheries Trust has $120,000 available for kaupapa that deliver direct social benefits to community Iwi members.
The elected Iwi Representative (trustee) that sits on the Trust board must approve the kaupapa and allocation is made in consultation with the relevant trustee. Some recent kaupapa include:
- Waitahanui Integrated Catchment Plan – Ngāti Mākino, 2019
- Kaumatua Firewood Project – Ngāti Tahu/Ngāti Whaoa, 2019
- Apumoana Marae Kitchen Renovation – Tūhourangi, 2017
- Playground installation at Rangitihi Kōhanga Reo – Ngāti Rangitihi, 2016
- Wānanga on Waikōhatu Marae – Ngāti Tarawhai, 2018
Applications open on 1 October [SM1] each year and all completed documentation must be received at our Te Arawa Fisheries offices by 30 September to be eligible for the funding. Allocations are based on population. Ngāti Whakaue and Ngāti Pikiao have $20,000 to allocate annually and all other Iwi receive $10,000.
